Who We Are
Our Roots
Here at Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. Alpha Omicron Chapter (Washington, DC), we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is a little support. Since our founding in 1961, we have been determined to make an impact.
In the summer of 1961, the late Mayme Diggs of Detroit, Michigan, met with a group of women to discuss the formation of a chapter of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. in the nation's capitol. Due to the interest shown by these women, Alpha Omicron chapter
was chartered on November 4, 1961.

Although we are a sorority that values many of the bonds and connections treasured by other sororities, Gamma Phi Delta is not a typical sorority. Until recently, we did not have undergraduate chapters. And we are not part of the Divine 9 (although we have several members who are also members of those groups!) Instead, the core of our efforts is to bring together business and professional women with fresh ideas and passion to work for the betterment of their community with a pointed focus on youth development. To that end, we were once known as a business women's sorority.
Since its inception, Alpha Omicron has maintained the goals of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. by focusing its efforts in the following areas:
* Sponsoring youth auxiliaries
* Fostering and discovering young artists
* Providing scholarships for area youth
* Supporting minority businesses.
Activities that relate to these area have been many and varied. Over the years the chapter has rendered service to DC Junior Village, Freeman's Hospital, Howard University Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Galbraith AME Zion Church, National Council of Negro Women, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Soup Kitchen and our service continues on.
Through all of our endeavors we hope to display the convictions behind Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc.
As our country experiences unprecedented challenges, we know that our youth need support and encouragement now more than ever, and our sister friends need support, too. As this pandemic forces so many of us to feel and be isolated from loved ones, we hope to continue to support and inspire each other.
